Below: me, Rich the owner of the RV Park and Marilyn who flirted Rich into the photo with us.
Parks are expensive, so after our first night – and by the way, that’s where we spent happy hour getting to know the gracious Ontarian couple Dale and Lewis who were welcoming, gracious and fun – we backtracked 20 miles to Pilar Campground in Orilla Recreation Area on the Rio Grande for two nights. Even though we had to drive back into Taos for exploring, it was worth it to stay in a small, rural setting next to the river and hiking from our campsite.
The vans: Lulu in the foreground and SaVanna. Both are Ram Promasters. Marilyn’s is a custom build, mine came as an RV by way of two previous owners and the first year as a rental, from Pleasure-Way.
While in Taos, we toured the Earthship Visitor Center compound: https://earthship.com/visit in which Marilyn had a personal interest. The Taos Art Museum and Fechin House with its intriguing backstory and gorgeously detailed woodworking is worth expending an hour to absorb. https://www.taosartmuseum.org
Thought-provoking, unusual, creative. Telling stories are embedded in these artworks at the Charles Collins Gallery in Taos’s Plaza.
Back at camp in the Orillo Recreation Area we hiked the Vista Verde Trail high above the Rio Grande Gorge.
Delicate, colorful high desert flowers.
One could spend much more time than two days absorbing Taos, it’s history, hiking and the beautiful scenery in the hills surrounding the area, but we have a focus for this trip: Atlantic Canada.
Fun to read your posts, Kay! Are you in Newfoundland now? Looking forward to photos, photos, photos!
Glad you’re enjoying the posts Berta. I’m accessing some of the itinerary you created a few years back. We have just begun a week at Graves Island, then Caribou Munroe Provincial Park, then Cape Breton for 10-12 days. Our ferry to Newfoundland is July 9th!
