After celebrations of Dad’s 90th Birthday,
Lulu and I headed south, on October 6th, to Fort Steven’s State Park in NW Oregon. CT, down from Sitka and her sister Judy, from Portland were already there. It was decent weather and mid-week saw few campers.
There’s miles of hiking and biking trails, birding-watching, and exploring the 542 acres of the park. In nearby Astoria we accessed wifi in the library’s parking lot to watch some of the VP debate, live, on my computer. Liv’in in the 21st Century!
Astoria is a gem, with the old town area an attraction for eateries, bakeries, river walking, ship-watching, museums and rich in history. A special delight on this outing was when I texted a friend, come to find out she and her husband were camping in the next loop at the park!
For an armchair adventure, read Ivan Doig’s novel: The Sea Runners. Once you get accustomed to the writing language it’s a grand adventure based on an actual events in 1853 stretching from Sitka, AK, to Astoria.
