Our anchorage tonight is a long-extinct volcanic island. One end stretches long and slow into the sea, another side is cliffs and rocky shores. Wildlife is more abundant here than we’ve seen congregated elsewhere: a sea lion rookery amongst the sunning rocks, a multitude of birds species.
The most excitement was the escort we recieved from dozens of dolphins as we approached our anchorage. They swim near the bow, wending their way, rolling and careening much to our delight. After anchoring, we watched as they continued their route, cavorting, jumping, tail slapping, fishing. They’ve been by now several times which makes me believe they continually circumnavigate the island finding it rich in foods and nutrients.
The song birds serenading from the island provided the dinner music as we enjoyed a brilliant sunset and the quieting of the day.
