Sea Legs, November 4

On the first day out, everyone is fresh and rested. We’re all in the cockpit, hoping for winds, enjoying the scenery, wondering what the next several days will bring, and preparing to start those overnight watches. When there’s not enough breeze to set sails, the excitement soon wanes. We sit around watching the seas roll by and the minutes tick into hours. It was that type of day when leaving San Diego. However, after discovering we are in the Enchilada Division of this Baja Haha rally, I decided to make use of my time and energy to create chicken enchiladas, cornbread muffins and green beans! It turned out to be a pretty good meal, but a pretty long day in the galley, which did nothing to help me get my sea legs. Although there was no wind heeling us over, that didn’t stop the swell from rolling us around.  Getting sea legs takes time standing and swaying, not with the roll, but opposite the roll of the boat. Kind of like ‘putting on a little english’ when riding a bike. By dinnertime I was a hint cranky with feeling ‘off’.
Next day, there were leftover enchiladas for dinner, leaving plenty of time to dance with Quijote and get sea legs.
All’s well that ends well.

  1. Can’t imagine what it must be like to cook in a kitchen while swaying! Better you than me, if you remember our epic boat sightseeing boat trip in Ucluelet, where I was seasick the whole time!
