Solo in San Diego

Quijote is in San Diego until November 4th. With Rod having left for Seattle yesterday, and the other crew already gone, it’s just Sancho Panza and me for another week. Unfortunately, the marina here couldn’t make any concessions for me to stay longer than their 10 nights per calendar month. So, the two of us (Sancho Panza & me) will be with Quijote during the day and commuting nightly to the San Diego Downtown Hostel via the Blue Line Transit. ☹️
Looking on the bright side, it gets me out and getting to know S.D. a little better. I’ve been to the central library, a coffee shop where they also serve up beer slushies (is that a good thing?), and I can join in hostel activities, such as learning Salsa dance moves, then head out on the town to dance!

At Quijote I’m getting to know our itinerary for Mexico through Rod’s library and on line information. Also on my daily schedule is vacuum sealing smaller portions of baking basics, rice, grains, and other dry goods in anticipation of the humidity we’ll encounter for the next several months.

Having finished the book “Cannery Row” by John Steinbeck, I’m on to another volume along the same lines, highlighting Steinbeck’s best friend and co-hort, Ed Ricketts. First hearing this name in Sitka, I’ve since discovered Ricketts was instrumental in identifying marine biology in the sea of Cortez and along the Pacific coast to Sitka, where his daughter currently resides. Fascinating, entertaining, biography: “The Outer Shores” by Eric Enno Tamm. By the way, not only did Ricketts inspire Steinbeck in his writing, conversations along with much drinking inspired mythologist Joseph Campbell in his younger years towards the path he took in life.
Being solo in San Diego isn’t all that bad!
