With all the hullabaloo leading up to this trip, departure can be anti-climactic. We threw the lines at 09:30, easily transited the canal, the locks, waited briefly for the railroad bridge to be raised and Quijote was freed to enter Puget Sound and head north.
With not much wind to speak of, the day was calm enough for me to spend it down below, organising and finding space for the fresh fruits, vegetables, and berries.
On approach to Port Townsend, a fine sailing vessel, festooned with flags lining her shrouds overtook us. A banner identified her as ‘Maiden’, an historic vessel with a rich background. She was greeted and escorted by an handful of Port Townsend finest ships, including the majestic Adventuress, with full sails raised. The dock was filled with folks awaiting her arrival. There was much festivity for the mess 2 hours Maiden was able to stop.
There’s quite a story about Maiden, which can be seen in a recent documentary by the same title, maybe still in theaters.
